Position Available: Dean of the College of Education, Health and Human Services, Kent State University

Kent State University invites nominations and applications for the
position of Dean of the College of Education, Health and Human
Services. The University seeks a dynamic and accomplished leader who
has strong academic credentials; demonstrated skills as an
administrator, researcher, teacher, and collaborator; and the ability
to build both internal and external partnerships.

KENT STATE UNIVERSITY

Founded in 1910, Kent State University is the largest public
multi-campus system in northeast Ohio, with campuses reaching nine
local communities and a population of approximately 42,513 students,
3,635 full-time faculty and staff members, and 210,560 alumni. On July
1, 2014, Dr. Beverly J. Warren became President of Kent State, after
serving successfully as the Provost at Virginia Commonwealth
University, and prior to that, the Dean of the School of Education at
VCU.

The university’s Kent Campus has a student body of 28,457 and a
thriving residential population of 6,432. Kent State offers more than
300 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Academic programs are
organized into ten colleges: Architecture and Environmental Design;
Arts and Sciences; the Arts; Business Administration; Communication
and Information; Education, Health and Human Services; Nursing;
Podiatric Medicine; Public Health; and Applied Engineering,
Sustainability and Technology.

Kent State has eight regional campuses which draw full- and part-time

ranked Kent State as one of the top 200 universities in the world, the

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES

The College of Education, Health and Human Services’ 410 faculty and
staff serve more than 3,900 undergraduate students and over 1,500
graduate students, as well as providing extensive continuing education
offerings.

A strategic priority for the College has been recruiting and retaining
a more diverse student body.  Through the creation of the Office of
Diversity Outreach and Development, the College provides outreach
support and programs to underrepresented student populations.  The
College has also had great success recruiting students from across the
globe, with a current enrollment of over 190 international students.

The College of Education, Health and Human Services currently offers
five associate programs, 18 undergraduate programs, 24 graduate areas,
and 13 doctoral programs through its four schools:

• School of Health Sciences
• School of Foundations, Leadership and Administration
• School of Lifespan Development and Educational Sciences
• School of Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum Studies

The College of Education, Health and Human Services also has several

THE POSITION

The Dean is expected to provide leadership to, and serve as the
principal administrator of, the College to include complete line
responsibility for personnel, general administration and management,
budget, academic, and development functions.  The Dean should have the
energy and skillsets to lead the College in its drive to increase
excellence, and in developing a shared vision for the future of the
College.  In particular, the Dean should have the ability to:

• provide leadership, instructions, guidance, or counsel to College
faculty, staff, students and administrators;
• advocate for students and support the work and mission of a
multidisciplinary faculty;
• promote a culturally aware and welcoming environment with a strong
commitment to recruiting and retaining diverse faculty, staff, and
students;
• advance the College’s internationalization initiatives, enhance its
global partnerships, and build on the strong traditions for global
service and research;
• administer the College-wide personnel function to include ensuring
compliance with various federal and state laws, and University and
College personnel policies and procedures;
• provide leadership in strategic planning;
• manage, allocate, and monitor College budgets; make budget requests
to Executive Officers; provide advice on budgets and fiscal
management;
• provide leadership and oversight to all academic programs; encourage
and support continuous improvement of programs and curriculum;
evaluate and approve all curricular changes, advising functions, and
student recruitment and retention actions and initiatives; develop and
review curricular and programmatic initiatives; enforce policies and
practice required for State approval of licensure programs and
continuing national accreditation;
• provide leadership and infrastructure to support faculty research
and external funding initiatives;
• lead fundraising initiatives and promote alumni development to meet
current and future College priorities;
• increase public understanding and support for the College as a
contributor to the state’s vitality and well-being; and
• represent the College to University administration; serve as a
College advocate and spokesperson at academic, social, and public
functions; and be involved with community service activities.

Successful candidates will have attained distinction in and can
exhibit evidence of the following:  knowledge in their field;
outstanding leadership and management ability; strong sense of vision;
established and sustained research record with a strong appreciation
for and commitment to academic research; strong appreciation for and
commitment to quality undergraduate and graduate teaching and
learning; substantial administrative experience within a complex
university setting; commitment to fundraising; and effective
interpersonal relationship skills with groups and individuals both
internal and external to the College and the University.

Candidates must possess a doctoral degree and possess a record of
scholarly and professional accomplishment to qualify for appointment
at the rank of professor with tenure.
