2016 International Conference on Paulo Freire

The Department of Educational Studies at the University of British
Columbia announces the 1st EDST Annual International Conference
Series: 2016 International Conference on Paulo Freire

May 6-7, 2016 | University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada

This conference will explore the life and thought of Paulo Freire from
a variety of angles and perspectives, with special attention to
underexplored and overlooked aspects of his thought including, but not
limited to: Latin American voice and imaginary; psychoanalytic,
psychological, and therapeutic implications and applications; poetic,
phenomenological, and humanistic forms of research; and liberationist
philosophy and theology. Scholars and students from all fields of
study across education, the humanities, arts, and social sciences are
invited.

The conference will consist of refereed paper sessions, select panel
discussions, and plenary talks by the following distinguished
scholars:

“From Divine Pedagogy to the Pedagogy of God: Liberating Theology”
Eduardo Mendieta Penn State University

“On the pain of symbolization in the lifeworld of the mind: Paulo
Freire and Mrs. Klein”
Deborah Britzman York University

“The Call of the World, the Poetics of the Word”
Eduardo Duarte Hofstra University

Blinded abstracts in English, Spanish, or Portuguese between 300 and
400 words (including sources) should be submitted via email to
sam.rocha@ubc.ca by December 15, 2015 with a subject line of “FREIRE
2016.” Select paper submissions will be considered for subsequent
publication in an edited volume. Live translation into English will be
made available at the conference. Notice of decisions will be sent by
January 15, 2016.
