Professor: Open Rank Position in Bilingual/Bicultural Education
Position: The Program in Bilingual/Bicultural Education at Teachers College, Columbia University is seeking a candidate with expertise on bilingual/multicultural language learning and teaching in the content areas and emphasis on the creative use of technology to support the learning and imagination of bilingual students. We are searching for a bilingual academic who has taken up a role in leading the theorization of latest trends in bilingual education, addressing issues of educational equity and achievement, and who has published research in relation to subject matter (especially on technology and disabilities), with ample bilingual classroom experience, experience in working with minoritized student populations in their native language(s), and an emphasis on Spanish/English.
The Program in Bilingual/Bicultural Education holds a sociocultural approach to the learning of language, literacies, and content. We focus on the theorization and the pedagogies of learning and teaching content through languages. Being a teacher education program we are interested in supporting our teacher candidates with innovative pedagogical practices on how to teach through multiple languages.
Responsibilities: Maintain an active research and publication profile. Teach graduate courses in bilingual education, particularly, courses which combine a focus on Bilingualism with one or more of the following broad areas: Content areas, Technologies, and Disabilities. Advise graduate students, collaborate with teachers in schools, and participate in program administration and development activities. Provide leadership in bilingual teacher education.
Qualifications: Earned doctorate in bilingual/bicultural or an associated field; evidence of scholarly accomplishment; a minimum of three years of classroom teaching experience in the U.S. public schools with strong quality models of bi/multilingualism (preference will be given to teaching experience with bilingual special education populations); experience working with minoritized communities; successful experience working with preservice and inservice teachers; service to the field of bilingual education; leadership potential in teacher education; and the ability to work collaboratively.
