New York State Foundations of Education Association--2014 Conference

Dates: February 28-March 1, 2014

Where: Colgate University, Hamilton, NY

Keynotes: Julie Cavanagh and Tony Hoagland

The New York State Foundations of Education Association invites
participation in its 43rd Annual Meeting themed, “Teachers and Teacher
Educators Talking Back: Reclaiming the Public in Public Education”, to
be held at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY from February 28 – March
1, 2014. We welcome all those interested in the foundations of
education as scholarship and lived experience, with special attention
to the following topics:

• Talking Back: Testimonials of Active Resistance

• Fighting Back: Organizing in Schools

• Social Justice and Arts Based Teaching: The Antidote

• Preparing Social Justice Educators Despite the Odds

Our special effort this year is to combine the themes of teacher
activism with a specific focus on use of the arts to bring a
curriculum of activist energy into the classroom.

Our conference is intimate, activist oriented, has no concurrent
sessions, and provides a great space for alternative formats,
dialogue, and feedback. We are particularly interested in success
stories and there is opportunity to publish in our peer-reviewed
journal, Educational Change.

This year, beloved contemporary American poet, Tony Hoagland, will be
joining our proceedings and offering his thinking about the place of
poetry and the arts in the reclaiming of the K-12 curriculum from the
corporate offensive. And, in addition to her keynote on Friday night,
Julie will be running an ORGANIZING IN YOUR SCHOOL session on Saturday
morning for K-12 teachers and other interested parties.

Proposal Guidelines:

All proposals are due by December 1, 2013. Submit your proposal of no
more than 350 words with selected citations to both Barbara Regenspan
(bregenspan@colgate.edu) and Mark Stern (mstern@colgate.edu).

For further information contact Dr. Elizabeth Bloom at bloome@hartwick.edu

You don’t need to be from NY State. Undergraduate Students, Graduate
Students, and K-12 teachers welcomed and wanted! Alternative formats
welcome! Please distribute widely! PDF Attached!

We would also like to acknowledge the unfortunate scheduling conflict
with our friends and colleges who are putting on the Equity and Social
Justice Conference in Syracuse on Saturday, March 1. We hope that some
of you who plan to attend that conference might think to join us in
Hamilton (less than an hour away) for talks by Julie and Tony on
Friday night.
