Position: The Department of Curriculum and Instruction is seeking a faculty member at the
assistant or associate professor level in bilingual education with a focus on literacy. This is a fulltime,
nine-month, tenure-line or tenured appointment depending on rank at the time of hire.
Position Description: The Department of Curriculum and Instruction, ranked fifth nationally by
US News and World Report in 2013, possesses a long-standing reputation in the areas of
bilingual education and literacy. We seek candidates with expertise in the literacy development
and instruction of English learners (preschool-grade 12). Candidates will undertake a program of
research that will lead to an outstanding and sustained record of scholarship and external
funding. Teaching assignments will include undergraduate and graduate courses in linguistic and
cultural diversity, the bilingual/ESL endorsement programs (on-campus, online, or hybrid),
and/or literacy. Successful candidates also will participate in graduate program development and
in the recruitment and training of graduate students.
Qualifications: Earned doctorate in bilingual/ESL education or a related field and expertise in
literacy required. Candidates at the assistant professor level must have an earned doctorate at the
time of hire. Candidates at the associate professor level must have an established record of
research, teaching, and service, as well as external funding to meet the University’s requirements
for tenure at the rank of associate professor. Demonstrated interest in working with children and
families from diverse racial, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds, as well as with children of
various academic performance levels required. Teaching experience (preschool-grade 12) with
English learners and students from diverse populations desired.
Responsibilities: Carry out an active program of research and actively pursue external funding.
Advise and recruit Master’s and doctoral students in bilingual education with a focus on literacy.
Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate-level course work related to linguistic and
cultural diversity, bilingual and ESL education, and/or literacy. Contribute to the ongoing
development of undergraduate and graduate programs. Provide leadership and service at the
national, state, and local level related to bilingual education and literacy.
Salary and Starting Date: Salary will be commensurate with experience. The proposed starting
date is August 16, 2014.
