RESPONSIBILITIES

The Department of Literacy Education at Northern Illinois University is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Professor of Postsecondary Literacy. The Department of Literacy Education offers coursework in reading, language arts, bilingual education, ESL, and postsecondary literacy and is responsible for overseeing university and college literacy programming targeted to enhancing undergraduate student success.

The qualified candidate will be expected to teach graduate courses and oversee internships for college reading/learning specialists; teach undergraduate reading and learning strategy courses; undertake scholarship in the field of postsecondary literacy; take leadership in curricular redesign related to all aspects of postsecondary reading education; participate as needed in program, department, college and university service, This is a permanent, tenure-track position with salary based on experience. Desired start date is August 18, 2013.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Doctorate in reading education, developmental education, educational psychology, or higher education with an emphasis on postsecondary reading and learning instruction; two years postsecondary learning assistance or developmental education instructional experience; knowledge of strategic reading and learning theory, research, and best practice; knowledge of student assessment and testing; evidence of a developing scholarly agenda; and evidence of effective communication and planning skills.

PREFERRED SKILLS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess one or more of the following: Participation and/or leadership in professional organizations; ability to develop web-based communication and instruction. Experience in undergraduate and graduate teaching.
