Assistant Professor, Secondary Education

About the Position: The Woodring College of Education invites dynamic and innovative individuals with multicultural experience who are able to work across college and university departments to apply for appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Secondary Education Department.   

In this search, the department seeks a promising and innovative scholar who is firmly and actively committed to promoting diversity and social justice through scholarship, teaching, and service at public schools, universities, and community settings.  We seek candidates with extensive experience working with diverse populations, such as multicultural/multilingual students and families; American Indian Education and Native populations. Preferred applicants take a inter-/trans- disciplinary approach to addressing pressing challenges in our world and society today, including education for sustainability, transformational leadership, and creating equitable and just systems. Preferred applicants will have expertise working with English Language Learners and can provide bold, imaginative, and collaborative leadership to our dynamic faculty, students, and the local, state, and national communities that we serve.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to a vision for the preparation of the next generation of teachers who recognize that social justice requires a critical analysis of social, cultural, and institutional systems
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Secondary Education, such as general methods and pedagogy courses; instructional technology; educational foundations courses (9 month appointment, with summer optional) 
  • Work within the college to support English as a Second Language curricular efforts and initiatives
  • Supervise students in community-based and/or school-based practicum experiences
  • Participate in school, community and university collaborations and partnership work
  • Participate in service within the department, college, university, community and professional organizations
  • Work with department and college to align curriculum with state and professional performance-based standards and integrate creative and innovative pedagogy
  • Collaborate in the development of innovative undergraduate and graduate programs, such as field-based courses; courses delivered online; hybrid courses; alternative route programs
  • Maintain an active and engaged program of scholarship that addresses contemporary issues and challenges
  • Advise and support undergraduate and graduate students
  • Mentor and support individuals who traditionally have not had access to higher education, including first-generation college students, English language learners, underrepresented and underserved student populations
Required Qualifications:
  • Earned doctorate in Secondary Education, Multicultural Education, Second-Language Acquisition/Bilingual Education, Curriculum Studies, social and cultural foundations of education, or a closely related area by the time of appointment 
  • Evidence of five or more years of successful teaching or other relevant school-based experiences in a middle or high school, public preferred
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with diverse populations
  • Demonstrated strong ability to foster middle school, high school, and/or community relationships and engage in learning collaboratively with students, community partners, staff, and colleagues
  • Experience working with teacher preparation standards
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience preparing educators in bilingual education or English as a Second Language
  • Experience working in bilingual education or with ESL students
  • Experience or interest in field-based teaching and collaborative models of bridging school/university classrooms
  • Experience with clinical supervision
  • Experience teaching in a state-identified high-needs area such as middle school/high school mathematics, sciences, and/or special education
  • Research interests in areas that further teaching and learning in a globally interconnected, diverse society in areas such as social justice; sustainability; internationalization, culturally-relevant pedagogy; democratic education 
  • Scholarly work with interdisciplinary, intercultural, and/or trans-disciplinary approaches to education for social justice
  • Experience with alternate pathways to teacher education, or direct transfer programs and pathway programs leading to teacher certification
  • Strong pedagogical and technical knowledge of inclusive technologies to support all learners
  • Experience with systemic and/or cultural change
