The College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for a tenure-track associate professor of Leadership in Urban Schools, to begin September 1, 2015. The successful candidate's research and teaching expertise will be in K-12 urban school leadership or policy studies with specialization in one or more of the following areas: leadership theory, organizational theory, and /or change theory. Candidates who conduct mixed methods research with strong quantitative abilities are preferred.
Responsibilities include: 1) teaching graduate level courses in the Leadership in Urban Schools programs; 2) carrying out an active research and publication agenda that makes significant contributions to the fields of K-12 urban education and leadership; 3) chairing and serving on doctoral dissertation committees; 4) contributing service to the university's urban mission, to university and departmental committees, and to professional associations.
Candidates must possess an earned doctorate in education or a relevant field, a record of effective graduate teaching, and experience working in P-16 educational settings (experience as a teacher or administrator in public schools preferred). Candidates should have demonstrated experience conducting research that has an explicit social justice focus and that can serve as a model of how research can facilitate change in education. They should be well prepared to bridge theory, research and practice and to guide doctoral students in designing and conducting this type of integrated scholarship. Willingness to teach summer courses is desirable. Candidates should have a record of successfully chairing doctoral dissertations, the ability to mentor junior faculty and scholar-practitioner doctoral students, and a record of external grant funding.
The Department of Leadership in Education provides a dynamic environment for faculty and graduate students to engage in nationally-recognized research, especially in areas related to equity issues, school reform, organizational change in K-12 and higher education, education policy, leadership, and the social context of urban and higher education from local, state, national and global perspectives. The curriculum focuses on preparing K-12 urban and higher education leaders who are committed to fostering, facilitating, and managing change in diverse settings, and on the preparation and certification of administrators. The Department is home to three graduate programs: Ed.D./Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration, Ed.D. in Leadership in Urban Schools, and M.Ed./CAGS in Educational Administration. Additionally, Leadership in Urban Schools is in the process of developing a forthcoming Ph.D. program. All programs enroll full-time working professionals with diverse backgrounds and work settings. The programs are highly-regarded in the region for developing leaders in K-12 and higher education. Faculty have developed strong curricula in each program; they are active researchers whose scholarship has attracted national and international attention.
