Position Title: Austin Youth River Watch Summer Leadership Program Intern

Position Title: Austin Youth River Watch Summer Leadership Program Intern

Austin Youth River Watch advances personal and academic achievement through environmental monitoring, education and adventure.  We do this because working with our young people and helping our environment gives us hope for the future of our community.

Term: approx. 6/9/2014 – 7/31/2014 + training in the week of 6/2/14 and safety trainings

Wage: $12.00 - $14.00 / hr. (dependent on experience) x approx. 25 to 35 hours per week + additional hours for weekend activities

Expectations: Have a conversation with each student every day. Help students to make good choices and to stay out of trouble. Enter data and help teach students to enter data. Set a good example for the students by drinking plenty of water, wearing a broad brimmed hat, long pants, long-sleeved shirt and closed-toed shoes. Also, come with your swimsuit everyday so that you may assist if we go swimming or in emergency situations. Help Program Coordinators with field trips, special projects and campouts and other activities of the Austin Youth River Watch Summer Leadership Program. You may be asked to drive a 12-passenger van for program activities. Help maintain the EcoHouse (This means picking up after yourself and helping remind the students and others to do the same). Help maintain the kit and the storage area. Attain and/or Maintain safety certifications with the American Red Cross or other reliable safety training organization for Adult, Child and Infant CPR, Standard First Aid and Basic Water Rescue or equivalent. Reimbursement or payment for training can be made by Austin Youth River Watch on paid time outside of regular program hours. Austin Youth River Watch is an equal opportunity employer. Regular Schedule: Monday through Wednesday: 7:45 am to approximately 2:45pm

Field Trip Days on Thursdays: Expect longer days up to 8am to 5pm. Field trips can include canoeing, indoor rock climbing, either wild caving or commercial cave touring, or other fun adventures.

Special Events: Austin Youth River Watch may have weekend or overnight activities at which additional hours can be worked.  Usually weekend activities are scheduled for two weekends during the program period. These events typically begin on a Friday afternoon and end on aSaturday mid-day.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be a high School Graduate or GED recipient with at least one year of college preferred. Multilingual preferred. Background working with high school students and/ or water quality monitoring helpful. Austin Youth River Watch program graduates will be given preference.

Selected Candidates must attain: Health Clearance, Fingerprinting and Child Abuse Index Clearance from Department of Justice, Criminal Background Check, and Driving record check.

Location: The Austin Youth River Watch EcoHouse is located in far East Austin at Hornsby Bend near the Austin Airport.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in both internal and external environments and with exposure to inclement weather, and varying temperatures. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Must be able to lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) such as boxes. May hike, drive, stand, or walk for long periods of time.
