New M.S. in Social Justice in Education, College of Education and Psychology, The University of Southern Mississippi

Our department recently added a Social Justice emphasis area to our M.S. in Education degree. The new M.S. in Social Justice in Education will allow students to develop research and critical thinking skills through coursework and applied experiences. They will also learn about critical pedagogy, race/ethnicity and schooling in the U.S., and about social justice practices in education through our core curriculum. Although we have a curriculum designed to meet the needs of students interested in higher education, we also have flexible course options available for those interested in K-12 work, Student Affairs, Adult Education, and other areas within education.

The degree plan is designed so that it can be completed through one year of full-time study (or students can take fewer courses per term and engage in more research and practical field experiences). The degree can also be completed either entirely in residence on our campus in Hattiesburg, MS, or through a combination of online coursework, an eight-week summer residency, and a two-week winter residency. Our physical location provides unique and abundant opportunities for situated, historical, and contemporary work in the area of social justice in education as a center of the civil rights movement and contemporary struggles for equality.

Please consider passing the attached degree information sheet along to those who might be interested in or would benefit from this type of program. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
