Essential Functions (Job Duties)


Coordinates the planning, organizing, implementation and sustainability of the Chicano-Boricua (CBS) Scholars Program, which resides in the Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies (CLLAS). The CBS Scholars Program is an extensive two-year student support services program primarily geared towards the recruitment and retention of students interested in Latino/a and Latin American cultural studies. It is also designed to develop a solid intellectual and motivational foundation for academic and professional success based on a student-centered, community-grounded, self-empowerment model. Upon satisfactory completion of the 2-year program CBS Scholars have the option to pursue a Latino/a Studies minor specialization and/or to continue further career development and graduate/professional school preparation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


Lead Center's efforts, in collaboration with the WSU offices of admissions and financial aid, to recruit new students to attend the University through the CBS Scholars Program by coordinating visits to feeder schools within and outside he Detroit metropolitan area to recruit students and setting up and team-leading special informational sessions at on and off campus sites; organize and oversee CLLAS orientation sessions for newly admitted CBS Scholars in order to assist them with registration, financial aid, and related areas related to their transition and adjustment to Wayne State University.

Assess the college-readiness of prospective and current CBS Scholars and recommend suitable scaffolding techniques and tools to progressively improve their academic success.

Advise, coach, motivate and otherwise support students in meeting the academic and professional requirements of the CBS Scholars Program;

Provide one-on-one and small group academic, financial aid, career orientation and tutoring sessions for first- and second-year CBS Scholars;

Coordinate with other campus units to keep track of special class sections in Mathematics and English composition for the CBS Scholars;

Facilitate academic success seminars, including LAS 1410, for the CBS Scholars;

Organize and oversee the Summer Enrichment Program for incoming CBS Scholars;

Recruit, screen, training and supervise peer mentors for the CBS Scholars Program;

Plan, coordinate and facilitate academic and professional development activities for peer mentors and interns that enhance the retention and graduation of the CBS Scholars Program participants;

Collaborate with Center faculty to support the retention and graduation of CBS Scholars;

Maintain strong community relations with Center's community partners, particularly local and regional K-12 school districts;

Develop and/or maintain qualitative and quantitative records and reports of CBS Scholars to track their academic progress and to enable the Center to re-align recruitment, retention and graduation initiatives according to performance results and other factors;

Proactively develop internal and external funding proposals, such as grant and other fund-raising efforts, to support the CBS Scholars Program;

Monitor the funds allocated to the CBS Scholar Program to ensure that they stay within budgetary parameters and in compliance with the Center's policies and procedures;

Analyze resource utilization and services and recommend policy and procedural changes to improve the delivery services and effectiveness of the CBS Scholars Program;

Provide extensive educational support system for students through additional suitable collaborations with CLLAS faculty, staff, peer mentors, interns, other internal and extern partners;

Act as a liaison and resource to schools and civic, cultural, business, non-profit and governmental organizations that partner with CLLAS;

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education: Master's Degree

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED
Project Coordination: Ability to independently coordinate a variety of delegated projects while following up on multiple deadlines, keeping track of assigned tasks, and ensuring their completion on a timely basis. Strong time coordinating and team-oriented skills.
Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally both orally and in writing.
Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office tools including Microsoft word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint, and Prezi. Reasonable knowledge of Banner Student Information System and/or STARS.
Planning and Organizational Skills: Demonstrated capacity for multi-tasking, flexibility in the face of changing priorities and timelines, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Prioritize and plan work activities; adapt to changing conditions and develop strategies to achieve organizational goals.
Other Skills: Outstanding strategic thinking skills and problem solving abilities. Demonstrated success in grant writing, fund development, program development and budget oversight. Strong mentoring and coaching skills. Proven ability to motivate people and foster collaborations, and inspire confidence to meet common objectives.
Bilingual in English/Spanish.

Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration, Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or LMSW preferred.
