The University of Alabama’s interdisciplinary New College invites applications for a critically engagedinterdisciplinary social scientist for a tenure-track (9-month) faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 16, 2016. The successful candidate will maintain a research and teaching emphasis in one or more of the following: social and economic inequality, globalization studies, food studies, and critical regional studies. Research and teaching may contain a discipline-specific component but should also include a demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinarity. The successful candidate will be appointed to New College and another department within the College of Arts and Sciences, based on the candidate’s background and experience.
A completed Ph.D. in a relevant social science discipline (such as history, political science, or psychology) or interdisciplinary specialization is required. The successful candidate will teach lower-level interdisciplinary seminars such as “Cooperation and Conflict,” upper-division interdisciplinary seminars in the targeted areas of specialization, and courses in another department that fits the candidate’s background and experience. Required also is the ability to advise a diverse group of students with varied interests including but not limited to social justice, nonprofit management, globalization studies, food studies, and sustainability studies.
New College is a dynamic, seminar-based program of interdisciplinary and integrative studies that was founded at The University of Alabama in 1971 to serve undergraduate students who pursue individualized programs of study. For faculty and students alike, the program provides an integrated liberal arts experience with access to the resources of a large, comprehensive research institution. New College has a long tradition of commitment to interdisciplinary and cross-cultural work and maintains good relations with partner departments across the university.
