Central Austin has its first Justice For Our Neighbors (JFON) Legal Immigration Clinic, a nationwide network in collaboration with the United Methodist Church. The monthly clinic is on the last Saturday of each month at Servant Church in Central Austin. The Clinic is operated by an immigration lawyer, our only paid staff person, and volunteers providing everything from translation services to hospitality and child care. We are currently able to serve about 6 families each Clinic and thus far, most of the clients have been primarily Spanish speaking. This means that we have a high need for Spanish translators who can help facilitate the intake process prior to meeting with our bilingual immigration lawyer. The only qualification is a willingness to help serve this vulnerable population while adhering to a strict code of confidentiality. While about 6 Spanish translators are needed each month, we are also developing an "on call," network of volunteers who speak other languages. Interested volunteers should contact Philip Garcia, the Translations Coordinator, at ppg1980@gmail.com or call him at 254-744-8971.
