Job: Texas Appleseed hiring a Data Scientist / Senior Research Associate

Position
This position serves a critical role in carrying out our mission. The associate will work closely with directors of multiple projects and will have opportunities to integrate data and findings across projects. The associate will also be involved at every stage of our research—from proposals to implementation to analysis and reporting. 
 
Duties
Research design:
  • Developing surveys and other data collection instruments for various stakeholder groups (such as K-12 students, parents, consumers, legal clients, board members)
  • Identifying new sources for acquiring project data (such as state agencies, community groups, academic collaborators)
  • Knowledge of data frames and dataset design for processing and maintaining large volumes of data
 Data collection, analysis, and presentation:
  • Acquiring project data from primary research and secondary data sources 
  • Integrating project data with geographical information systems and census data
  • Streamlining and maintaining existing databases/data systems
  • Identifying the most appropriate analysis to use for problems and questions presented 
  • Analyzing quantitative data using varied statistical techniques (such as linear and logistic regression, ANOVA, t tests)
  • Presenting data in charts, graphs, tables, maps, and otherwise making data accessible to diverse audiences, including the general public
  • Contributing to analytical sections of research reports
Other duties may be assigned as necessary.  
 
Qualifications 
  • Ph.D. in Statistics, Psychology, Education, or a related social science; doctorate may be substituted for Master's degree with 2+ years’ professional experience analyzing quantitative data
  • Expert-level proficiency with at least one statistical package (such as R, SPSS, Stata, SAS, or equivalent software); familiarity with Excel Pivot Tables
  • Experience with geographical information systems and census data 
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to issues of social and economic justice
