Job Announcement: Assistant Professor in Elementary Social Studies Education, Iowa State University


The School of Education (SOE) in the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State
University invites applications for a tenure line faculty position in Elementary Social Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor.

We seek a dynamic, innovative, and enthusiastic colleague who will collaborate with our current social studies faculty in the design, instruction, and leadership of social studies in our pre-service elementary teacher education program. In addition to participating in teacher education, we seek a colleague who will engage in scholarly research, serve on master’s and doctoral committees in Social and Cultural Studies of Education (the graduate home of social studies education) and other areas within the School, teach graduate courses in areas of scholarly expertise, and participate in the intellectual and service culture of the School of Education and Iowa State University.

Though we are open to area of research specialization and methodological approach, we are particularly interested in scholars who have a line of inquiry focused on one or more of the following (listed alphabetically): (a) cultural and linguistic diversity and the teaching and learning of social studies; (b) discipline specific inquiry in elementary social studies (e.g. historical inquiry, geographic inquiry); (c ) gender and sexuality and the teaching and learning of social studies; (d) pre-service and/or in-service social studies teacher learning; (e) race and racism and the teaching and learning of social studies; or (f) social justice education and the teaching and learning of social studies.

Required Qualifications: (a) an earned doctorate in Social Studies Education,
Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related field by the start date (August 16, 2017); (b) experience working in P-12 schools; (c) evidence of potential to develop an active research agenda, establish a strong publication record, and secure external funding commensurate with rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) at Iowa State University; and (d) experience that demonstrates a commitment to educational equity.

Preferred Qualifications: (a) experience as a P-12 classroom teacher for two or more years; (b) experience working in/with pre-service elementary teacher education; (c) evidence of successful teaching at the post-secondary level; (d) evidence of the potential for a sustained scholarly focus on equity in education.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications.
