The Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education and Human Development, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Second Language Education. This is a full-time tenure-track position in a highly regarded college of a major urban research university beginning Fall Semester 2016. This faculty member will contribute to the research, teaching, and service in the program and department. Located in the culturally diverse cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, the University offers a multitude of opportunities for research and engagement in communities statewide. The Twin Cities offer a vibrant and rich environment for second language education research and teaching. Schools and communities have a wide range of innovative ESL programs serving our many and varied minority language communities. Minnesota also has a strong history of offering strong school-based world language education programs, and the state boasts 90+ language immersion and bilingual programs in 8 languages serving both majority and minority language students as well as indigenous language learners.

The Second Language Education (SLE) program is committed to supporting outstanding language education for all students. The individual will work with pre-service and in-service language teachers (in at least two of the following areas: ESL, world language, immersion or bilingual education) as well as Ph.D., M.A., and M.Ed. students in language education. Our graduates assume leadership roles locally, nationally, and internationally as university faculty members, educational leaders, policy makers, researchers, and teachers.

Minimum Essential Qualifications:

·       Knowledge of and commitment to second language education across a range of fields (ESL, world language, bilingual education, immersion education).

·       An earned doctorate in second language education, applied linguistics, or a closely related field. Applications from ABD candidates may be considered provided the individual is on track to complete the doctorate by August 29, 2016.

·       At least one year of teaching in or involvement with second/world/immersion/bilingual language education in K-12 settings in the U.S.

·       Evidence of a commitment to educational access for minority language learners and equality of access to world language instruction for all students.

·       Language proficiency in at least one other language in addition to English.

Preferred Qualifications:

·       A record of publication and efforts to obtain external funding commensurate with the applicant’s professional status.

·       Evidence of a commitment to teaching, research, and working with P-16 schools in multicultural urban settings, and interest in the social, cultural, or linguistic contexts of schools.

·       Background and interest in teaching courses outside the SLE program in curriculum and instruction (e.g., research methodology).

·       Research and teaching expertise focused on contexts, practices, policies, and/or processes of world or second language teaching and learning.

·       Demonstrated experience using technology to enhance language teaching and learning, particularly online teaching.

Specific responsibilities of the individual hired include, but are not limited to:

Research (40%):  Articulate and implement a strong agenda of basic and applied scholarship pertinent to second language education, maintaining a commitment to securing external funds to support scholarly inquiry. It is expected that the candidate will develop a strong record of publication.

Teaching and Advising (40%):  Contribute to the teaching and advising of undergraduate minor, initial licensure students, and graduate students (practicing teachers, M.A., M.Ed. and Ph.D. students) in the SLE program. The individual will be expected to teach four courses per academic year with summer teaching opportunities available.

Service (20%):  Make strong contributions to the ongoing activities of the SLE program, the department, the College, and the University. Participate in community service and/or other outreach and public engagement activities and in the activities of relevant professional organizations.

Appointment Details: The individual hired will be appointed to a full-time, 9-month position beginning August 2016. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
