Two Year Visiting Professor and Chairperson for the Education Program, Barnard College 2014-2016

Search Description:

The Education Program at Barnard College, Columbia University welcomes applications for a full-time position beginning in fall 2014, for a Visiting Professor or Visiting Associate Professor to direct and teach in the program. The Barnard Education Program offers certificates and minors/special concentrations in Urban Teaching and Educational Studies to undergraduates at Barnard College and Columbia University (Columbia College, SEAS, and the School of General Studies) and qualifies those in Urban Teaching for New York State Initial Certification.  Grounded philosophically in the liberal arts tradition, the program supports the intellectual development of graduates who are committed to urban public education and prepared to make contributions to society through their work and leadership in varied educational settings.

Qualifications:  Candidates must have an earned doctorate in Education, Sociology, Psychology, Urban Studies or a related discipline, and should have leadership experience as well as teaching experience in public school and university classrooms.  Ability to teach courses in Educational Studies and Secondary Education preferred. The candidate should be a strong scholar/teacher/leader and provide evidence of commitment to urban education.  Responsibilities include:  directing the program; representing the program at Barnard, in the broader university community and in New York City; teaching courses in curriculum development and pedagogy; developing courses aligned with the candidate’s area of specialization; pursuing a program of research and scholarship in own field; working closely with New York City teachers and principals in supervising student teachers.
