National Academy of Education and GW Release Report Evaluating Teacher Education Programs
WASHINGTON—The National Academy of Education (NAEd), in collaboration with the George Washington University’s Graduate School of Education and Human Development (GSEHD), today released a report addressing key methodological and policy issues in the evaluation of teacher preparation programs. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the report reviews existing methods of assessing the quality of teacher preparation programs and develops a framework for improving the evaluation of those programs.
"While the calls for measuring and improving the quality of teacher preparation across the country grow louder, so does the need for a systematic analysis of various approaches that are used to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of those programs," said NAEd President-elect and Dean of GSEHD Michael J. Feuer. "Educators and policy makers can look to this report for guidance on implementing and improving upon evaluation strategies."
A steering committee of the NAEd, chaired by Feuer, set out to study the role of evaluation in the broader context of the need to improve teacher preparation, which would ultimately enhance student learning and academic success. The final report, entitled "Evaluation of Teacher Preparation Programs: Purposes, Methods, and Policy Options," was officially released today during the NAEd’s annual meeting. A panel discussion hosted by GSEHD enabled an open public discussion of the report’s findings and recommendations.
