Healing Pedagogies: Connecting Body & Soul for Transformative Education, @nd Annual Cultural Studies in Education Graduate Student Conference
“Healing Pedagogies: Connecting the Body and Soul for Transformative
Education”
2nd Annual Cultural Studies in Education Conference
Presented by the Cultural Studies in Education Graduate Student Council
Call for proposal: Deadline for submissions is Friday, February 15, 2013 by
10PM.
The theme, “Healing Pedagogies: Connecting the Body and Soul for
Transformative Education,” responds to the need to create a space for those
involved in education in all capacities to engage in a process of hyper
self-reflexivity, that is, of constantly reflecting on what makes us what we
are in the process of conducting academic work.
Academia can be a dehumanizing and fragmenting structure. Academia regularly
emphasizes our intellectual capabilities while devaluing and burying the
emotional components of our work. Our emotions and spirituality play large
roles in our development as scholars and in our work. How does this tension
impact not only our psyches but the relationships we have with others,
ourselves, and with our work? This conference attempts to bridge the realities
of this fragmentation dialogically within our community and provide a space for
exploration and discovery that values both “Body and Soul for Transformative
Education.”
We welcome proposals engaged in a process of hyper-reflexivity and involved in
the examination of social, cultural, political, economic, historical,
linguistic, and psychological influences in educational contexts. We seek
submissions from those involved in education in any form. Possible topics
include: K-12 schooling; higher education; youth popular culture(s); immigrant
youth, their families, and communities; identity constructions; disability and
education; physical education, visual and performing arts education;
educational programs within communities; adult/continuing education; and
student/community activist movements and organizing.
Your proposal should address any of the following questions:
1. How do you negotiate the internal struggle to incorporate emotional
knowledge within your work?
2. How do you actively approach this topic within various spaces (academia,
research, community, family, etc.)?
3. How does other work bridge these internal and external processes?
We accept proposals in various formats, including: workshops, roundtables as
well as creative work, such as visual art, film, and performance art.
Please send a brief description of your proposed idea and any questions to
utaustincse@gmail.com and please include contact information and whether you
need materials and equipment you will need.
Guidelines for Proposal Submission
Submit your proposal via email (utaustincse@gmail.com) by February 15, 2012.
Include the following information: Title, abstract (150-250) words,
presentation format, equipment, and/or accommodations needed for the
presentation. Presenters will be allocated 15-20 minutes to present their work.
This conference is intended to provide a space for students, and community
members and organizations to present research focusing on education. It is also
intended to provide students an opportunity to gain experience in the process
of submitting, preparing, and presenting research at an academic conference.
Most importantly, the conference aims to support all participants in all
capacities, whether they are emotional, spiritual, and/or academic. We will do
our best to provide you with feedback, if requested, on your current research
projects.
You may present your research in one of the following formats:
• A course paper you intend to expand as a conference paper or to submit
for publication to as a journal article.
• A paper being presented at an upcoming conference (use this space to
practice).
• A writing workshop on how you incorporate the general theme of the
conference to your research.
• A draft of a chapter from your dissertation.
• An idea you seek to develop and/or incorporate to your research.
• A roundtable where you discuss a current theme in education.
This list is partial and is intended to provide suggestions on presentation
formats. Proposals need to address engagement with hyper-reflexivity in the
process of examining the social, cultural, political, economic, historical
linguistic, and psychological influences in educational contexts. Be sure to
include the format of your presentation in your proposal abstract.
You will receive information about your proposal status and any other
pertaining conference information through email by March 8, 2013.
