Educational Research
in the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Research.

Qualifications: An earned doctorate in Educational Research or a
closely related discipline that clearly evidences training and
education in qualitative methodologies and teaching experience at the
college level are required. Scholars with graduate qualitative
certificates are highly desired. Applicants will be expected to uphold
a commitment to excellence in teaching and research, and be willing to
share responsibilities for advisement and administration of a
University-approved Graduate Qualitative Certificate Program. We
desire applicants with strong qualitative training and experience who
demonstrate methodological and socio-cultural theoretical innovation
in their teaching and research. In particular, we are interested in
scholars who can contribute to our University-wide Graduate
Qualitative Certificate Program through knowledge of multiple
methodologies such as grounded theory, phenomenology, case study,
ethnography, and narrative inquiry, and through social justice
oriented scholarship. Applicants must be well versed in macro social
theories (post-positivism to post-structuralism) and the critical,
post-modern, and narrative turns. Successful applicants will highlight
their abilities to teach across various philosophical paradigms and
academic disciplines. Scholars who are open and knowledgeable in both
qualitative and quantitative methods, and who engage in innovative
methodologies, theories, and creative analytic practices are
particularly encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities: Share administrative, advising, and teaching
responsibilities for the University-wide Graduate Qualitative
Certificate Program, mentor students, continue a focused program of
scholarly research and publication, supervise doctoral research of
advanced graduate students, chair and serve on master’s and doctoral
committees, and participate in national professional organizations and
university/college service. The successful candidate will work
collaboratively with the current qualitative methodologist to maintain
a standard of excellence through both introductory and advanced
qualitative courses. Our department currently houses two
graduate-level qualitative students groups and offers 18 credits of
graduate level qualitative research. We hope to expand course
offerings as our program grows.
Setting: The University of Memphis, a Tennessee Board of Regents
institution, is recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as one of two
public research universities and the only community engaged public
university in Tennessee. It has six colleges and three professional
schools serving a diverse population of nearly 23,000, 5,000 of whom
are enrolled in graduate programs. The University is strongly

degrees in Educational Psychology and Research and in Counseling and a
doctorate in Counseling Psychology. The Educational Research area also
