Australian Journal of Environmental Education--Call for Manuscripts

Call for Paper Proposals

Australian Journal of Environmental Education (AJEE)

Special Issue: Putting food on the table

The Australian Journal of Environmental Education (AJEE) invites submissions for a Special Issue (SI) dedicated to the theme “Putting food on the table”.

Over recent years, within Western contexts, discourses of risk, health and obesity have tended to dominate much of the scholarship around food. Conversely, and simultaneously, we have also witnessed a resurgence in the ‘gastronomification’ of food, particularly within its representation within popular culture. Running alongside these competing discourses are fears around food security and global food sustainability. This call is seeking contributions from scholars working at the intersections of food, environment and education. We are interested in various stories of food, its origins and associations and its journeys, both from producer to consumer and student alike, across time, space and context.

This SI then, further intends to bring a variety of perspectives on food to the table. We therefore seek contributions that are interdisciplinary, that engage with the past, present and/or future of food, with local and/or global inequalities in food distribution and with the differing meanings and practices related to food across contexts.

Abstracts must be concise, identify a key scholarly purpose or research problem and demonstrate engagement, insights and/or evidence about the key aims of the SI. Summaries must briefly describe how such insights or evidence draw upon the research and scholarly literature and will be used to critically develop examples, themes, trends, issues and tensions relevant to the purposes of the manuscript. We
anticipate the SI will include diverse framings of research, including different theoretical, methodological, pedagogical or policy perspectives on food including:

Food and education – within and beyond the classroom
The ethics of food
Food, identity, culture and context
The politics of food production and consumption
Food security
Sustainability, climate change and food
The history of food
Food and location
Food and popular culture
Food, health and wellbeing
Hunger across contexts

Please submit paper proposals (500 words) to Dr Emil Gray at
emily.gray@rmit.edu.au by February 28, 2013. Full paper submissions will then be required by 23 July 2013 viahttp://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayJournal?jid=AEE. It is anticipated that this Special Issue will be published June 2014 (Issue 1).
