TESTIMONIAL FOR CETLALIC

By Pauline Clardy, Ph.D.
Bilingual Education Program Coordinator
Department of Curriculum and Instruction
Illinois State University

CETLALIC's program offered more than we expected in every aspect of the program.  First, our students were welcomed into the homes of families who treated them as if they were their own children.  These families paid attention to the educational needs of the students as well as their personal well-being and supported them in every possible way. Secondly, our students received customized instruction in Spanish at their proficiency levels.  Students reported that the low teacher - student ratio was very helpful as were the authentic activities that the teachers provided.  Third, the series of lectures and videos taught our students about the history, culture, educational system and contemporary realities of Mexico while enlightening them about the struggles and resilience of its people.   Fourth, the school visits provided a context for our students to observe Mexican students in both public and private schools, and gave them an opportunity to talk to various school stakeholders.  This enabled them to consider various perspectives and make comparisons to U.S. school systems.  Fifth, the excursions provided students an opportunity to see more of historic Mexico and experience exciting adventures.  CETLALIC's emphasis on social justice challenged our students to look beyond traditional accounts of history and current events and question inequities in schools and society.  Students report that Jorge and Martha worked tirelessly to accommodate their needs, which in some cases included making adjustments to the program.  I feel that our students will now understand the Mexican immigrant children that they will someday teach and will be better prepared to include their history and culture in the classroom and the curriculum.  I support the work of CETLALIC, and I would highly recommend its programs to other universities and colleges.
