WE CON 2016: CLAIMING SPACE || MAKING SPACE CALL FOR WORKSHOPS & PROGRAMMING

The third annual Women’s Empowerment Conference (WE Con 2016) will be held Friday, April 1, 2016 and Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the Austin Community College Eastview campus. WE Con 2016 is a community-driven event where women and girls share skills and have conversations about gender, race, sexuality, disability, class, and more. Women and girls can also make friends, connect with new ideas, and learn about other women-friendly organizations. This event is hosted by the Women’s Community Center (WCC).

Proposals are due no later than January 31, 2016 at 11:59 pm CST.

THEMEThe theme of “Claiming Space || Making Space” was suggested by a community member and volunteer of the Women’s Community Center, and we ask that you use it to guide your creativity. Historically, patterns of marginalization have greatly affected feminist spaces, even as they espouse notions of equality and justice. Certain women’s voices and experiences are heard and valued while other women’s voices and experiences are ignored or silenced. This year’s theme encourages us to not only claim the space that we have been denied, but to also do the work of moving back. We want others to have the opportunity to be centered, valued, and heard.

FOCUS AREASThe conference will be organized around focus areas, which were selected by the WCC, in collaboration with community members. These focus areas highlight ideas and experiences that we want to amplify throughout the conference. Workshops and programming must be connected to at least one of the following focus areas.

Reproductive Justice & Radical Motherhood
DIY Skill Building
Social Justice 101
The Impact of Violence
Health, Wellness & Self-Care
Youth (ages 12-19)
Activism by Transgender Women of Color & Gender Non-Conforming People of Color

NOTE ABOUT PROPOSALSThe WCC extends an invitation to all women and girls of central Texas to create and facilitate workshops and programming related to the focus areas listed above. We strongly encourage women and girls to pay close attention to intersectionality when submitting their proposals. In keeping with the theme, we will select proposals that demonstrate a keen (self)awareness of power, privilege, and oppression and will make space for historically marginalized voices and experiences accordingly.

LANGUAGE JUSTICEWe will provide English-to-Spanish and Spanish-to-English interpretation and welcome proposals in these languages for ALL focus areas. WE CON 2016: RECLAMANDO ESPACIO || HACIENDO ESPACIO // CONVOCATORIA PARA TALLERES Y PROGRAMACIÓN

La tercera Conferencia Para el Empoderamiento de la Mujer (WE Con 2016) se llevará a cabo el 1 y 2 de abril del 2016, en el cámpus del Colegio Comunitario de Austin (ACC) - Eastview. WE Con 2016 es un evento dirigido por la comunidad, donde mujeres y niñas pueden compartir conocimientos y tener conversaciones sobre género, raza, sexualidad, discapacidades, clase social y más. Mujeres y niñas también pueden formar nuevas amistades, conectarse con nuevas ideas, y aprender más sobre otras organizaciones que apoyan a las mujeres. El Centro Comunitario para las Mujeres (WCC) es el organizador de este evento.

NUESTRO TEMA
El tema que une a la conferencia es Reclamando Espacio || Haciendo Espacio. Este tema fue sugerido por un miembro de la comunidad y voluntarios del WCC y esperamos que se pueda utilizar para guiar su creatividad. Reconocemos que, históricamente, la mayoría de los espacios feministas no son representativos de las mujeres que más necesitan y merecen esos espacios. El tema de este año nos anima a no sólo ocupar el espacio que se nos ha negado, sino también nos anima a hacer el trabajo de apoyar a otras mujeres cuyas experiencias han sido silenciadas e ignoradas. Queremos que más mujeres y niñas tengan la oportunidad de ser valoradas y escuchadas.

ÁREAS DE ENFOQUEComo organización, y en colaboración con miembros de la comunidad, hemos seleccionado áreas de enfoque para la conferencia. Estas áreas resaltan las ideas e identidades que queremos amplificar durante la conferencia. Talleres y programación deben enfocarse en por lo menos una de las siguientes áreas.

NOTA SOBRE PRESENTADORASEl centro extiende una invitación a todas las mujeres y niñas en el centro de Texas para crear y facilitar programación relacionada a nuestras áreas de enfoque. Recomendamos que presten atención a la intersección de sus identidades si piensan entregar una propuesta para la conferencia. En consonancia con el tema, vamos a seleccionar propuestas de personas que demuestran una conciencia de sí mismas y una conciencia del poder, de privilegio, y de la opresión. Estamos comprometidas a hacer espacio para las voces y las experiencias que rutinariamente son marginalizadas.

JUSTICIA DE LENGUAJEVamos a proporcionar interpretación de inglés-a-español y español-a-inglés y estamos buscando propuestas en estos idiomas para todas las áreas de enfoque.
