The Department of Bilingual and Literacy Studies at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is accepting applications for an Associate/Full Professor and Department Chair.
UTRGV is a newly-established institution bringing together the assets and resources of The University of Texas-Pan American and The University of Texas-Brownsville. With a total enrollment exceeding 29,000, UTRGV is one of the largest institutions of higher education in Texas and the second largest Hispanic-service institution in the nation, with an emphasis on educating 21st century leaders and professionals who are culturally fluent and have a deep understanding of the perspectives, languages, and values of different cultures. The new university will also be home to a medical school in fall 2016. UTRGV is in the middle of one of the fastest growing areas in the nation, the southern tip of Texas known as the Rio Grande Valley.
The Department of Bilingual and Literacy Studies offers graduate programs and undergraduate courses designed to help educators meet the linguistic and literacy needs of preschool through grade 12 students. We support the education of diverse students in monolingual, bilingual and multilingual settings. Our faculty and students are committed to understanding the linguistic and literacy strengths of traditionally underserved populations, examining the educational needs of children in these communities, and designing and implementing curriculum, instruction, and policy that will support their language and literacy achievement.

The College of Education and P-16 Integration at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is seeking an innovative and experienced leader to chair the Department of Bilingual and Literacy Studies beginning in Fall 2016. This is a faculty position with 50% administrative responsibilities. The Department Chair will have expertise in Bilingual Education and will teach face-to-face and online undergraduate and graduate bilingual education courses, conduct research and participate in other scholarly activities, and encourage and support growth and innovative initiatives. The Department Chair is responsible for overall leadership and administration of the department including oversight of academic programs, faculty review, course scheduling, budgets, support of faculty productivity and professional development, and facilitation of innovation.
All finalists for the position will be considered for the C. Bascom Slemp Endowed Chair in Education. The holder of an endowed chair will normally be a tenured faculty member with the rank of Full Professor who has had a distinguished career. In exceptional circumstances, a tenured Associate Professor, with a distinguished career may be appointed for the endowed position. Candidates for an endowed chair position must have a strong scholarly record and substantive evidence of a distinguished career, especially during the three to five years
