The Department of Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies at the University at Albany, SUNY, invites applications for appointment as associate professor starting Fall 2017. The position is for a scholar of the Spanish-Speaking Caribbean with an active research program on the Dominican Republic, Cuba and/or Puerto Rico.

The department seeks a scholar who employs an interdisciplinary and comparative approach, with an emphasis on the study the 20th century development of the Spanish Speaking Caribbean. Scholars whose research elucidates the intersection of cultural studies and political economy are especially encouraged to apply. The following areas are of particular interest: colonial and postcolonial studies; comparative political and social history, race relations and racialized social systems, imperialism and peripheral capitalist development, Caribbean transnationalism and migration.

The successful candidate must be able to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas specified above as needed to support the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Only applicants with a record of research and publications commensurate with the requirements for a tenured appointment in a doctorate-granting public high-intensive research university will be considered. The successful candidate also will serve as Director of Graduate Programs for an initial two-year period.

A Ph.D. in history, social sciences or interdisciplinary field (Latin American Studies, Race and Ethnicity, American Studies) is required. The Department will consider candidates with an active research profile who show promise of developing an outstanding publication record, and who have a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education.
