Since its inception in 1975, the International and Multicultural Education (IME) Department has been committed to understanding inequalities based on race, class, gender, and nationality as a way of promoting educational scholarship and research based on principles of equity and social justice. IME provides students with educational experiences that generate leadership, ethical responsibility and service to all communities with focused studies on formal and informal education within social, cultural, and linguistic contexts in both the United States and abroad. The IME Department has always been innovative in its curriculum and scholarship, by utilizing a comparative lens to examine educational issues and by promoting critical pedagogy and participatory action research. IME offers three MA degree programs: MA in Human Rights Education (unique in the US), MA in IME, and MA in TESOL, in addition to the Ed.D. in IME, with possible concentrations in Human Rights Education and Second Language Acquisition.
Job Responsibilities
Responsibilities include developing and teaching LGBTQ studies in education (aligned with the critical lens of IME and intersectional in nature), qualitative and participatory action research methods, and other courses for the Masters and doctoral programs; contributing to program, curriculum, and policy development of LGBTQ issues throughout the School of Education; conducting research and publishing scholarly work in education; supervising students on capstone projects and doctoral dissertations; assisting with student recruitment and advising; and contributing to School of Education and university initiatives and mission, including building partnerships with schools and communities.
Requirements
The successful candidate should have a program of research that utilizes qualitative and participatory methodologies to address problems of educational inequalities based on race, class, gender, and sexuality through engaged scholarship that is collaborative and innovative. Candidates are sought who work with the themes of globalization, migration, transnationalism, and/or urbanization with a focus on LGBTQ issues vis-à-vis education and whose research is social justice-oriented. We are especially interested in candidates who use queer theory as an analytical tool, and who will complement and strengthen our existing scholarship in this area. These methods may include, but are not limited to participatory action research, visual methodologies, oral histories, testimonios, individual and focus group interviews, critical ethnography (including digital ethnographic research), and/or critical discourse analysis. Candidates should possess a doctoral degree in education with expertise in LGBTQ issues in education and qualitative research methods; excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills; and excellent higher education teaching experience or potential.
