Job Announcement: Executive Director

SWOP was founded in 1980 with a mission to empower our communities in the Southwest to realize racial and gender equality and social and economic justice. We seek to redefine power relationships by bringing together the collective action, talents, and resources of the people within our communities. We work primarily with low-income communities of color to gain community control of our land and resources. Our work is built on a foundation of direct community organizing—building personal and political relationships in the community, developing leadership, and taking action. The evolution of SWOP’s work over the past decade has led to a unique combination of deep grassroots organizing and broad-based voter engagement.

We are seeking applicants for the position of Executive Director. The Executive Director will report directly to the Board of Directors and be responsible for working with SWOP members, Board and staff to achieve strategic goals of the organization and ensure its financial health.

Specific Duties
Resource Management
Ensure that the organization’s fundraising goals are met.
  • Principal Fundraiser                       
  1. Responsible for overall resource development for SWOP.
    1. Develop and sustain relationships within local and national philanthropy.
    2. Develop and monitor fundraising efforts involving foundations, donors and earned income projects.
    3. Oversee the development and management of grants.
  • Finances
  1. Develop annual budget and appropriate systems to manage finances and assets.
  2. Work with administrative staff in monitoring income and expenses.

Vision and Strategic Direction
Ensure that program work of the organization is aligned with SWOP vision, mission and objectives.
  1. Oversee development of vision and implementation of campaign strategy.
  2. Manage strategic partnerships between SWOP and other organizations and entities.
Board Relations
Work with Board of Directors to further the vision and financial health of the organization.
  1. Serve as ex-officio member of SWOP Board of Directors.
  2. Develop and maintain a regular system of reporting to the Board.

    3. Personnel  
Staff / Office Oversight
Responsible for office management and staff development.
  1. Responsible for hiring, evaluating, disciplining, and firing staff.
  2. Responsible for professional development opportunities for staff.
  3. Ensure productive, efficient and safe workplace environment, including maintenance.
Qualifications
  • Must agree with SWOP’s mission and work.
  • Proven leadership abilities, including problem solving, decision-making, and engendering trust with and among staff.
  • Ability to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Bilingual (English-Spanish) proficiency a plus.
  • Flexible schedule and willingness to travel extensively.
Experience / Education
  • Experience fundraising from large foundations.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with grassroots organizing/union organizing.
  • Knowledge of New Mexico history and culture.
  • Experience in strategic campaign planning, including issue messaging.
  • Understanding of organizing methodology.
  • Experience with leadership development.
  • Experience working in a team setting.
  • Experience creating a budget.
  • Experience writing grant proposals.
  • Knowledge of SWOP campaigns a plus.
  • BA preferable.
