Job Title: 5th/6th Grade Classroom Teacher (Full-time)

The ideal candidate for Fifth/Sixth Grade Classroom Teacher has
experience with and is passionate about progressive education and what
it can offer children. This person has experience leading a classroom
with 15 students and/or co-teaching in a classroom with 15-25
students. Supervised by the Director for Curriculum and Instruction
and in collaboration with other faculty, this person will work with
students in a developmentally appropriate manner to develop emerging
curriculum while aligning with national, state, and school-level
curriculum goals. This is a co-teaching position under the mentorship
of the Lead Teacher/Coordinator of Middle Level Curriculum.

Essential Job Functions

· Generate thematic teaching that springs from students’ curiosity
· Integrate writing, reading, math, social studies, and sciences into
thematic project- or problem-based study
· Be flexible in allowing children room to grow at their individual
pace, attending to the social and emotional as well as academic life
of each child
· Work collaboratively with another teacher in a co-teaching setting
and possess skills and expertise that complement that of co-teacher
· Possess expertise in math/science/technology topics and ability to
take the lead in teaching these subjects and integrating them into
project work
· Use careful observation, anecdotal notes, artifacts of the child’s
own work, and other forms of assessment to document and nurture each
child’s progress
· Employ creative and alternate teaching strategies to foster each
child’s talents
· Express his/her ideas in a clear and timely manner in home/school
communications
· Write on average three narrative reports (to accompany three
parent-teacher conferences) for each child annually
· Foster a collaborative culture and work closely with colleagues

Qualifications

· B.A. or M.A. in Education or related field preferred
· Experience in teaching children in the upper elementary/middle level grades
· Ability to organize and manage classroom for purposeful,
project-based and problem-based inquiry
· Commitment to and understanding of child-centered teaching and learning.

Other Skills/Abilities

· Physical ability to escort students (e.g., on field trips, to the
gym and playing field, etc.)
