Texas Social Justice Series: The Right to Vote
Tuesday, June 2, 7 PM
Bullock Texas State History Museum
1800 N Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78701
The 4-part series will conclude in June with a program on perhaps the most important right afforded to American citizens—the right to vote. The program is meant to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Juneteenth, when the news of emancipation finally reached slaves in Texas. Join Dr. Dwight Watson from Texas State University and Dr. Henry Flores from St. Mary's University as they explore the historic events leading up to the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a landmark piece of legislation which aimed to enforce the voting rights enumerated in the 14th and 15th amendments. Discussion also covers historic disenfranchisement of racial minorities, the impact of the Voting Rights Act in Texas and current court decisions related to the law.

This program is presented in partnership with the Social Justice Institute at the University of Texas at Austin and the Texas Civil Rights Project. The Texas Social Justice Series is sponsored in part by funding from Humanities Texas.
