Additional Information

Purpose
Manages archival processing and collection development for the Black Diaspora Special Collections, including primary source materials, rare books, and artifacts related to the global African diaspora, with a focus on the Americas.
Essential Functions
Works directly with donors, faculty, and staff on collection development, appraisal, and acquisition of manuscript, rare book, and artifact collections. Leads efforts to develop both physical and digital collection resources in support of teaching, learning, and scholarship on campus. Archives Processing: Performs and supervises staff in processing archival collections, including arrangement, description (MARC and EAD cataloging), and preservation; Supervises one Graduate Research Assistant in archival processing and digitization projects, and mentors volunteer students and student groups from the UT School of Information in support of the Black Diaspora Special Collections program. Provides reference services for the Black Diaspora Special Collections to faculty, students and other researchers including in-person, by email, telephone, and mail; and photo duplication and digitization service.Leads instruction sessions and tours in support of teaching and learning at the university, and for special visitors and guests of the Benson Collection, LLILAS, the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies, and the Warfield Center. Provides public services including reference and circulation in the Benson Collection rare books and manuscripts reading room. Professional Representation of the Collection: Manages loans of African diaspora collection materials for exhibits, digitization, and microfilming projects. Works with UTL, LLILAS Benson, and Warfield Center development staff on grant project proposals and other fundraising activities. Provides outreach and scholarly presentations to the public, professional organizations and conferences, and student groups.

Required qualifications
MLS or equivalent from an ALA accredited graduate program. Professional experience in an archive or manuscript repository with processing archival collections, Encoded Archival Description, and related metadata cataloging practice. Demonstrated knowledge of African, African Diaspora, and African American Studies. Ability to establish and meet project goals, take professional initiative, and multitask. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, using tact, diplomacy, and discretion at all times including ability to communicate with diverse populations. Ability to work in a collaborative manner. Ability to interact in a professional manner with faculty, staff, students, researchers, donors and the public. Ability to work independently and as a team member. Must be flexible and willing to take on new responsibilities. Availability for international travel. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Three or more years of professional experience in an archive or manuscript repository with processing archival collections, Encoded Archival Description, and related metadata cataloging practice. Knowledge of and experience with digitization standards and processes. Experience in an academic library or other large research organization. Experience working with international populations. Experience providing library public service. Supervisory experience. Proficiency in one or more languages of the black diaspora in the Americas, such as Spanish or Portuguese, in addition to English. Certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists.
