THE GOIZUETA FOUNDATION GRADUATE SCHOLARS FUND ASSISTANTSHIP FOR 2015-2016

                                                                            

THE GOIZUETA FOUNDATION GRADUATE SCHOLARS

The Goizueta Foundation, founded by Roberto C. Goizueta (former Chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company), established The Goizueta Foundation Graduate Scholars Fund to enhance the education and skills of graduate students committed to improving Latino education. Our center’s Graduate Scholars are expected to learn and contribute to the educational improvement of underrepresented groups in the United States after they complete graduate school.  The Center for Latino Achievement and Success in Education (CLASE), housed in the College of Education at UGA, trains and supervises campus-wide graduate assistantships awarded to outstanding graduate students.

THE AWARD

This assistantship consists of a total stipend of $12,000, paid over ten months. In addition, students awarded these assistantships are eligible for a reduced tuition rate, paying only $25 per semester plus student fees. Students spend 13 hours per week starting in August 2014, working with the UGA Center for Latino Achievement and Success in Education. Assistantships are awarded for one year, and may be renewed for up to two additional years based on excellent performance and satisfactory progress towards degree.

ELIGIBILITY

Eligible students are current or incoming graduate students (preferably doctoral level students admitted to the Graduate School and a graduate program by the nomination deadline) in any department or college at the University of Georgia who have:

•        An outstanding academic record

•        Interest/expertise/experience in Latino education and/or potential and intent to contribute to Latino education in the United States during completion of graduate school and afterwards

•        Proficiency in Spanish

•        Citizenship, permanent residence, family in the U.S., or other indicia of intent to remain in the U.S. following graduation

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

New Applicants:   Applicants must submit electronically as a single .pdf, the following information: a letter of application describing how the applicant meets the eligibility and selection criteria (including Spanish proficiency, academic goals/department, and commitment to Latino education/outreach), a resume with contact information, and two letters of recommendation with contact information. Compile in the order listed above and save as a single Adobe Acrobat file, named with the last name of the applicant and “Goizueta” (for example, Matthews_Goizueta.pdf) and uploaded. Submission of application materials for the competition should be submitted electronically to:  http://grad.uga.edu/goizueta.

Continuing Applicants: In place of the above, current recipients of The Goizueta Foundation Graduate Scholars Fund Assistantships who are applying for an additional year of funding should provide directly to CLASE (by the same deadline as below):

1.     a letter from the Department Head or Graduate Coordinator indicating that the student is making satisfactory progress towards his/her degree;

2.     a letter from the candidate outlining accomplishments as a Graduate Scholar, expressing interest in and justifying the request for an additional year of funding.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

Priority for these awards will go to students based on the following criteria:

•        Interest in Latino education, culture, and related research.

•        Strength of academic record.

•        Strength of applications and references by department and professional references.

•        Strong commitment to Latino education and potential for impact in the United States after completion of graduate school as top scholars and/or professionals.

NOMINATION DEADLINE:

All nominations for new candidates should be submitted electronically to http://grad.uga.edu/goizueta  by 5 pm on March 15, 2015.

Current recipients applying for an additional year of funding should provide their letters by the same deadline (3/15/15) to CLASE, 125 Aderhold Hall. Candidates for these assistantships may also be interviewed (in person or by phone). Students will be informed of a decision in April 2015.
