Dear Colleagues,

From July 25th - 28th 2015, the European Sociological Association (ESA) will hold its 12th Annual Conference in the beautiful city of Prague, capital of the Czech Republic and only comparable in beauty to Paris.

The theme for this year’s conference is “ Differences, Inequalities and Sociological Imagination”. We invite you to submit papers to Session 5 : “Promoting Social Imagination at the Global Level: A  discussion about Migration and Intercultural Integration”.  The submission of abstracts (which should not exceed 200 words)  will be open until  February 1st, 2015.

Abstract for Session 5:

Globalization processes and a dynamic international migration are bringing about
remarkable demographic changes to European societies as well as other parts of the world.

Immigrants bring with them cultural practices, and diverse perspectives on all aspects of the human experience that daily transform, challenge as well as enrich the cultural fabric of the host communities. Dichotomies between "natives" and "newcomers" emerge, as well as new forms of identities and distinctions, as expressed in newly developed policies, in the art and literature of marginality, and in the immigrants’ patterns of integration.  In addition, there are also sources of conflict among generations within immigrant communities as well as in schools-- that do not feel prepared to educate immigrant children.

Societal inequities that are resulting from this active mobilization of peoples cannot be understood in isolation. Solutions need to be imagined and conceptualized from a global an cross-national perspective. This session gathers international researchers from Europe, and the US, to examine new paradigms, policies and practices for the development of an inclusive intercultural and transnational framework, in order to reduce social and educational inequities. This is necessary to positively integrate culturally-diverse families and their children into schools and societies.

Please send your proposals directly to the SEA conference website --indicating that
you are submitting to session 5.
