UT’s Second Annual Native American and Indigenous Student Symposium

A two day event free and open to the public!

Friday, April 26th, 2013 from 1:00pm - 8:00pm in Puerto Rican Culture Center (http://goo.gl/maps/4kNqD)

This symposium will be dedicated to addressing water disparities and the environmental impacts upon Native American, Indigenous, and First Nations communities. Indigenous Peoples from across the world continue to struggle for acknowledgement and recognition of their unique visions to protect water. Although the issue of water is multifaceted and complex, NAISA seeks to encourage indigenous based solutions and discussions that could aid the water crisis worldwide by bridging gaps between scholars, community members and youth.

The Water is Us: The Rights of Yanaguana symposium will include indigenous water scholars and activists such as Baltazar de la Cruz from Guatemala, Mescalero Apache elder Yvette Mendez, activist and spiritual leader Diana Barragan and Chief Caleen Audrey Sisk from the Winnemem Wintu people of northern California. On Friday, Dr. Tekina-eiru Maynard (Taino) will be presenting “When Nature Sings” a performance that uses original photography, inspirational anecdotes, and live native flute music. Chief Caleen will also present their award-winning documentary "Dancing Salmon Home." And the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas will share the original Yanaguana (water) songs with all of the community!
