Position Qualifications/Responsibilities

Position Qualifications - Responsibilities:Reporting to the Dean of the Bagwell College of Education, the chair serves as the academic and administrative leader of the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education and is the department representative in all official communications. The chair is expected to collaborate with faculty across the college and with other campus units, school districts, and external agencies. Typically, the chair teaches two classes per year. The position is a 12-month, tenure track appointment, and the salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The ideal candidate will have:
• Prior experience as a department chair.
• Experience in managing budgets, supervising personnel, and scheduling classes.
• Experience with strategic planning, curriculum development, program assessment, and accreditation.
• Expertise in building and maintaining collaborative relationships and in sustaining effective communities of practice among diverse faculty.
• Experience with grant procurement.
• At least five years of teaching at the elementary or early childhood level.
• Experience with online learning.
• Credentials to teach courses in the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education.
• Experience in scholarship and/or service at the P-12 level.
Required Education - Experience - Skills (Minimum Qualifications):• Doctorate in Education or a closely related field or the foreign equivalent, or its equivalent in training ability, and/or experience.
• Credentials appropriate to hold academic rank of associate professor or professor at Kennesaw State University. Please refer to university promotion and tenure guidelines at: http://www.kennesaw.edu/handbooks/faculty/section3_5.php.
• Record of progressively more responsible leadership positions in higher education.
• Record of working collaboratively with a diverse population of faculty, students, administrators, and staff to prepare teachers and leaders for diverse PK-12 classrooms.
• Sustained record of teaching, supervision, and mentoring; research and creative activity; and professional service to support 21st century learning through technology and innovative practice.
• Effective organizational, interpersonal, communication, and technology skills.
• Record of teaching in P-12 settings.
• Experience developing and evaluating innovative programs in teaching and learning, including accreditation.

Departmental/College Overview:The Bagwell College of Education (BCOE) is one of the largest and strongest teacher preparation units in the University System of Georgia offering bachelor’s, master’s, educational specialist, and doctor of education degree programs. All educator preparation programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and approved by Georgia’s Professional Standards Commission (PSC). KSU’s Educator Preparation Provider (EPP) is the university’s umbrella organization for preparing educators and includes 13 departments from five colleges all of which collaborate on the design, delivery, approval, and accreditation of all educator preparation programs. The EPP serves as a model of university-wide responsibility for teacher education; field-based collaboration with practicing professionals and partner schools; infusion of technology for enhanced teaching and learning; and best practices for the inclusion of English learners and students with disabilities.
As one of the larger departments at KSU, the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education has more than 80 full-time and part-time faculty members. The department serves over 1,500 Elementary and Early Childhood Education undergraduate majors and over 100 graduate majors. It offers programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and doctoral levels. Its M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education is now offered both as a totally online program as well as a face-to-face option. Certification for pre-kindergarten to grade five is embedded in the undergraduate program. In addition, the Birth to Kindergarten Bachelor of Science degree program was launched in 2011. Development efforts are currently underway to construct an Early Learning Center that will serve as a model for early learning education in the southeastern United States. It will be a laboratory school designed to serve 220 children ages birth through five.
