Call for Applications Submission deadline January 15, 2019 Institute for Latino Studies - Young Scholars Symposium University of Notre Dame -- April 24-26, 2019 The University of Notre Dame’s Institute for Latino Studies (ILS) convenes advanced graduate students and junior scholars from across the nation for a two-day Young Scholars Symposium, to enhance their research in Latino Studies. The symposium is hosted by Institute for Latino Studies Director Luis R. Fraga, the Rev. Donald P. McNeill, C.S.C., Professor of Transformative Latino Leadership, and the Joseph and Elizabeth Robbie Professor of Political Science. Presiding over the 2019 Young Scholars Symposium will be Distinguished Visiting Professor, Vicki L. Ruiz, Distinguished Professor Emerita of History and Chicano/Latino Studies at the University of California at Irvine. Professor Ruiz has recently been appointed scholar-in-residence at Occidental College's Institute for the Study of Los Angeles. Selected participants will present a completed essay that will be reviewed by Professor Ruiz and members of the Notre Dame faculty affiliated with ILS.  All expenses are covered by ILS including an honorarium of $500. Up to six participants will be selected. Applicants in their final year of graduate study and junior faculty who have not yet published their first book are eligible to apply to the ILS Young Scholars Symposium.  Application deadline January 15, 2019. Applicants should submit the following: Curriculum Vitae One letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor An application letter, under 2 pages, that presents a summary of the dissertation project and/or overall research program, a précis of the proposed essay submission for the symposium, a statement of progress to date on the overall project and on the proposed essay, a statement of how specifically Distinguished Visiting Professor Vicki Ruiz’s expertise and mentorship will enhance your research. The Southwest Council of Latin American Studies(SCOLAS) is now accepting panel and individual paper proposals for the 2019 Conference to be held March 21-23 at the Hotel Real de Minas in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. 

We welcome proposals from experienced and young scholars from all disciplines in Latin America studies, including but not limited to: Anthropology, Archaeology, Art History, Cultural Studies, Environmental Studies, Education, Ethnomusicology, Economics, Film Studies, Gender Studies, History, Linguistics, Literature, Indigenous Studies, Political Science, and Sociology. Proposals and papers can be in either English, Spanish or Portuguese. SCOLAS welcomes individual papers and panel proposals.

Please submit panel proposals that include three presenters and a chair or commentator to moderate the panel.

El comité organizador está aceptando propuestas de mesas y presentaciones individuales para el próximo congreso de Southwest Council of Latin American Studies(SCOLAS) que se llevará a cabo del 21 al 23 de marzo de 2019 en el Hotel Real de Minas, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato.

Open Rank Teacher Education position at UCLA

Tenure Track / Tenured Faculty Member Teacher Education, Teacher Policy,
and the Context of Urban Teaching UCLA The Department of Education at the
University of California, Los Angeles announces an Open Rank position for a
tenure-track/tenured faculty member who specializes in teacher education
broadly defined. We seek a person who can help us think “outside the boxes”
of traditional approaches to teacher preparation, while helping us to
navigate the current policy context. Candidates should have an active
program of research on issues relevant to teacher preparation, informed by
a clear stance on equity, diversity, and social justice in urban schools,
and a transformative vision of education. Specific interests could include
teacher policy, the recruitment and retention of quality teachers
(especially teachers of color), approaches to teacher education that unite
theory and practice in innovative ways, community-based teacher
preparation, and/or ways of supporting schools in recognizing, sustaining
and building on community cultural wealth, among other things. Of
additional importance is a history of experiences in urban schools, working
with immigrants, English Learners, foster youth,
racialized/minoritized/LGBTQ students, and those living in under-resourced
neighborhoods. The faculty member will teach both in the Center X Teacher
Education Masters’ program and one of four Education Department divisions
with academic doctoral programs relevant to K-12 schooling. Center X
prepares pre-service teachers with the theory, methods, and field
experiences to teach for social justice in urban Los Angeles schools. The
four divisions most relevant to K-12 focus are Human Development and
Psychology, Social Research Methodology, Social Sciences and Comparative
Education, and Urban Schooling. As a member of one of these divisions, the
successful candidate will teach doctoral courses and advise Ph.D. students
in the areas most pertinent to teacher education, teacher policy, and/or
the context of urban teaching. QUALIFICATIONS: A doctorate in education or
a related field. We strongly encourage applicants to apply whose doctorate
or research specialization is in Teacher Education or a related field;
experience with public schools (K-12); a record of research and scholarly
publications commensurate with appointment level; ability to teach and
advise students at the graduate level in both scholarly and teacher
education programs; a strong commitment to teacher education, social
justice, and educational equity for students in urban schools, and a
willingness to generate extramural funding for research. SALARY:

Cultural Survival es una Organización No Gubernamental, sin fines de lucro con sede en Cambridge, Massachusetts, Estados Unidos,  y con personal trabajando remotamente en Nepal, México, USA, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panamá, Sudáfrica y Canadá. Cultural Survival aboga por los derechos de los Pueblos Indígenas y apoya la autodeterminación, las culturas y la resiliencia política de las comunidades indígenas desde 1972. Hay aproximadamente 370 millones de personas indígenas en el mundo pertenecientes a 5,000 naciones diferentes, en 90 países en todo el mundo. Los Pueblos Indígenas viven en todas las regiones del mundo identificándose como Pueblos Tribales, Pueblos Originarios, Pueblos Indígenas, Adivasi u otros términos. Los Pueblos Indígenas constituyen aproximadamente el 5% de la población mundial.

El Proyecto de Medios de Comunicación Comunitaria Indígena de Cultural Survival ofrece subvenciones a estaciones de radio de comunidades Indígenas alrededor del mundo a través de un proceso de subvenciones simple y dinámico.  El proyecto de subvenciones está diseñado para satisfacer las necesidades de estos sistemas de difusión comunitaria en expansión.  Los fondos pueden cubrir equipos, capacitación en producción y periodismo, apoyo legal, producción de contenido, así como capacitaciones específicas que garanticen la sostenibilidad y el impacto de la radio.  Las estaciones de radio Indígenas en México, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panamá, Costa Rica, Colombia, Perú, Bolivia, Ecuador, Sudáfrica, Namibia, Botswana, Nepal y el norte de la India, con el objetivo de garantizar que las comunidades Indígenas tengan un medio viable y crítico para difusión de noticias, información, eventos comunitarios, documentación histórica, educación, organización y entretenimiento.

Responsabilidades:

• Este es un puesto de tiempo completo con base en México
• El o la Coordinador(a) del Proyecto de Subvenciones con base en México, bajo la supervisión del Gerente del Programa de Medios Comunitarios, será responsable de administrar las subvenciones a los socios actuales y futuros socios que soliciten fondos para proyectos de radio comunitaria Indígena. El o la coordinador(a)  también es responsable de revisar y negociar los acuerdos de subvención con los socios con el apoyo y la colaboración de dos consejos asesores y el equipo de medios comunitarios.
• Durante el primer año, el o la coordinador(a) del proyecto supervisará y apoyará aproximadamente 30 nuevos proyectos de radio comunitaria y coordinará el monitoreo y la evaluación de proyectos existentes en América Latina, Nepal, el norte de la India, Sudáfrica y otros países con el apoyo de los miembros del equipo residiendo en las diferentes regiones donde están los proyectos y con quienes ya se tienen relaciones de comunicación y colaboración.  Asimismo, el o la coordinador(a) organizará visitas a las radios al inicio de cada proyecto y durante la implementación del proyecto y dará apoyo técnico necesario hasta la culminación del proyecto.  Este puesto requiere viajes internacionales y a comunidades rurales en México al año.
• El o la coordinador(a) del Proyecto también es responsable de promover las  experiencias positivas de los socios en presentaciones públicas, comunicados de prensa, en el sitio web y la revista de Cultural Survival, y en otras plataformas de redes sociales.
• Finalmente, el o la coordinadora desempeñará el papel de experto nacional para México en el equipo de Cultural Survival, asegurando que el apoyo que proporcionamos sea culturalmente sensible y relevante para la comunidad. El o la  coordinadora informará al Gerente del Programa sobre las necesidades de la radio comunitaria, así como sobre cualquier reto imprevisto que surja durante la duración del proyecto.
• Proficiencia en inglés y español (escrito y hablado)
  • Se dará preferencia a candidatos con fluidez del idioma indígena
• Experiencia trabajando con estaciones de radio de comunidades indígenas

Special Issue Call for Papers: The Impact of Reserve and Reservation Systems on Indigenous Well-Being

In several countries around the world, non-Indigenous-dominated governments have created reserves or reservations where Indigenous populations have been placed. These land areas are legal designations for circumscribed territories occupied by one or more Indigenous Peoples in order to allow the State to perform the rational or bureaucratic administration of the lives of these peoples. They form an integral role in the longstanding colonial policy experiences aimed largely at assimilation and control of Indigenous populations.

The IIPJ is calling for policy and research submissions that relate to the impacts of the creation of reserves or reservations. We welcome submissions that are empirically grounded and relate to the impacts of these systems on the social, health, economic, political, or environmental well-being of Indigenous Peoples. The IIPJ welcomes a full range of methodological approaches but does seek contributions that are policy relevant and will be of interest to readers worldwide. Comparative studies are particularly welcome.

Submissions should be submitted for review no later than November 30, 2018

We expect to publish accepted manuscripts in summer (Northern Hemisphere) 2019.
