INTER-UNIVERSITY PROGRAM FOR LATINO RESEARCH SIXTH BIENNIAL SIGLO XXI CONFERENCE: MAPPING OF LATINO RESEARCH May 17-19, 2017 University of Texas at San Antonio The Inter-University Program for Latino Research in co-sponsorship with The University of Texas at San Antonio's Mexico Center will host in San Antonio, Texas on May 17-19, 2017 the sixth biennial Siglo XXI Conference on the Mapping of Latino Research. One in every eight Americans is Latino. It is estimated that "Latinos could account for one of every five residents by 2035, one of every four by 2055, and one of every three by 2100" (Saenz 2014). Thus, how we think and consequently act upon issues facing Latinos will affect the foundation of US society and its place in the hemisphere. Latinos are a diverse group with social and regional variations in class, education, race, migration experience, legal status, political participation, and religion to name a few. Additionally, each national group has its unique and complex set of relations to the US that has in turn influenced the subsequent development of its US-based communities. Knowledge is the basis of understanding as well as of policy. Comprehensive research about Latinos lays the groundwork for creating opportunities that provide alternatives to inequalities. Research can provide new ways of thinking about Latino communities and how they can grow and prosper. While there has been a steady increase in the production of research about Latinos, there are also areas that need to be considered as well as those that need to be expanded.
