Dr. Aguilar-Hernández will discuss his research on the history of the student-centered movement to departmentalize Chicana/o Studies at the UCLA campus between 1990-2005.  He uses critical race theory to analyze oral histories and archival documents to ask: 1) What strategies did student activists use to accomplish the establishment of a Chicana/o Studies Department at UCLA? 2) What was the racial climate (local and national) during the time period and how did it impact student’s organizing strategies? and 3) How did student activism impact the future career choices of student leaders? Aguilar-Hernández studies student social movements and their impact on higher education institutions.  He teaches courses in Education, Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies, Theory, Qualitative Methods, and Gender and Sexuality.
