Position Available: Davidson College’s Educational Studies Department


Position Available

Davidson College’s Educational Studies Department seeks a two-year
Visiting Assistant Professor of Educational Policy to provide
innovative research, teaching, and leadership reflecting the mission
of an undergraduate liberal arts college. The successful candidate
will begin in August 2016.

Qualifications:  A Ph.D. in a social science-related field with a
proven record of scholarship and teaching in Educational Policy.  We
will consider candidates with an Ed.D. from educational policy
graduate programs.  We prefer expertise in contemporary educational
policy issues including, but not limited to, educational change, urban
education, and/or literacy and language.  Priority will be given to
candidates with a focus on issues relevant to creating equitable
access to quality education.

Basic Functions:  The candidate may be from any social science
discipline, but there must be clear evidence of an active research
agenda, excellence in teaching, and leadership in departmental and
college-wide initiatives that promote educational studies.  The
candidate is expected to teach five courses a year with a combination
of upper- and lower-level courses.

Seeking Spanish speaking teachers in Seattle Area

The Kent School District in Kent, Washington (a small city in the Seattle metropolitan area) is seeking Spanish-speaking teachers for its dual-language elementary program for the 2016-2017 school year. More information on the openings can be found here on the KSD website. 

The KSD Simultaneous Biliteracy 50/50 model delivers instruction in both languages through Spanish-speaking and English-speaking partner teachers. The program is still in its growth years at four elementary sites.

Position Overview

The CARLA Director provides overall academic leadership for the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA), one of 16 National Language Resource Centers funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The CARLA Director plays a vital role in shaping the Center's mission, serves as Principal Investigator of the center's foundational Language Resource Center grant and other major grants, seeks additional funding consistent with the center's overall mission, supervises the Center’s administrative and programmatic staff, carries out research, provides oversight of summer institutes and workshops focused on second language acquisition and teaching, and directs the dissemination of the Center's work to the broader academic and language teaching community in the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Education and Human Development, the University, and across the country.

Position Duties

1. Academic leadership (40%)
  • Provide ongoing leadership and direction for the scholarly and pedagogical content of CARLA's projects and professional development programs including the Center's Language Resource Center projects such as conferences on immersion education and language teacher education (international); the CARLA summer institute program (international); the Minnesota Professional Development Consortium workshops (regional); the CARLA presentation series (campus-wide); and other special events.
  • Continue/develop a sustainable program of research and publication directly related to CARLA’s mission.
  • Serve as Principal Investigator for CARLA's USDE Title VI LRC Program grant, shaping quadrennial proposal content and supervising the directors of LRC projects.
  • Oversee the Center's budgets, working closely with the CARLA Executive Assistant Director to make budgetary decisions.
  • Oversee overall content of professional development initiatives, to maximize collaboration and broad dissemination to the language teaching community, both nationally and locally, especially in partnership with the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) Language Center and with the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD).
  • Design and supervise program evaluation and reporting for program analysis and improvement.
  • Report regularly to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Global Programs and Strategy Alliance, serve on GPS Directors Board and International Program Committee.
2. Research and advising for instructors of language programs in CLA (25%)
·      In collaboration with the CLA Language Center Director and Directors of Language Programs, provide research expertise to instructors of CLA language programs.
·      Provide SLA expertise and support for professional and curricular development projects in CLA.
·      Facilitate collaboration with the Language Center leadership to cultivate research opportunities for CLA language instructors, graduate students, and staff.
3. Grant-seeking and resource-seeking (15%)
  • Identify Requests for Proposals (RFPs) from funding organizations whose missions coincide with those of the Center, and supervise the writing of proposals in collaboration with academic partners and Center staff.
  • Write research and professional development proposals on topics in the Director's own areas of expertise.
  • Partner with CARLA Executive Committee members in their grant-seeking and grant-delivery efforts, acting as consultant to meet their needs for professional development work in connection with their grant projects.
  • Work with the GPS Alliance Senior Development Officer to create and carry out a development plan for the Center that engages the resources of community partners.
  • Work with CARLA Executive Assistant Director to create and deliver a dissemination and publicity system to maximize the Center's connections and community good will for the mission of the Center.
4. Disseminate the Center's resources and professional development work (15%)
  • Teach a weeklong CARLA summer institute annually on a topic related to the Director's own areas of expertise. (For background information see: http://www.carla.umn.edu/institutes/index.html)
  • Present the Center's work at state and national professional conferences to a wide audience of language teaching professionals.
  • Meet with other Language Resource Center directors and coordinators annually at the ACTFL Conference, collaborating with them to maximize resources through strategic partnerships.
5. Supervise CARLA personnel (5%)
  • Supervise CARLA's Executive Assistant Director, who is responsible for project execution, budget management and monitoring, and the summer institute program, and program staff, who are responsible for designing and delivering academic projects the Center is funded to carry out.
  • Supervise the heads of CARLA projects.
  • Organize and participate in Center searches for program staff, and oversee their hiring and layoff, in accordance with grant funding.
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in areas related to second language acquisition and teaching
  • Demonstrated scholarship, background and experience in language education
  • Knowledge about key national and international issues related to language education
  • Documented evidence of management ability, organizational and interpersonal skills, and strong public relations skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated leadership and professional involvement in foreign language education
  • Demonstrated success in writing, procuring, and managing grants
  • Demonstrated interdisciplinary team-building success in academic and/or non-academic settings

Position Details

  • 100%, 12-month, annually-renewable, Professional and Academic Administrative (P&A) position - Education Program Manager 4
  • Salary range - $80,000-$106,000 annually (depending on qualifications)

Becas de Viaje para Investigación: Estudios y Colecciones Latinoamericanas LLILAS Benson — Convocatoria para el período académico 2016-2017

El Instituto Teresa Lozano Long de Estudios Latinoamericanos (LLILAS) y la Colección Latinoamericana Nettie Lee Benson de la Universidad de Texas en Austin tienen el placer de anunciar una oportunidad para investigadores de México, Centroamérica, y Sur América. Se otorgará un máximo de tres becas  para realizar estudios en la colección.
La beca está dirigida a profesores, profesionales de investigación, y estudiantes con los siguientes atributos:
  • Investigadores con un título de doctorado pertenecientes a facultades de universidades Mexicanas, centroamericanas de Sur America
  • Investigadores con un rango avanzado dentro del cuerpo administrativo de museos de arte u otras instituciones de investigación
  • Estudiantes que están por completar su tesis doctoral
La beca consiste en un máximo de $3,000 dólares, los cuales pueden ser utilizados para cubrir gastos de transporte aéreo y alojamiento. El becario se compromete a permanecer en Austin por un período de 7 a 14 días. Sugerimos que los candidatos seleccionados soliciten una contribución por parte de su institución de origen para cubrir el costo de alimentación y transporte local durante su estadía.
 
El propósito principal de la beca es el de brindar oportunidades para investigadores mexicanos, centroamericanos, y de Sur America, de consultar las importantes colecciones de manuscritos, libros, y otros materiales relacionados con México, Centroamérica, y Sur America que alberga la Colección Benson. La Universidad de Texas cuenta con otras colecciones, dónde destacan: la biblioteca de la Facultad de Derecho, la colección de arte latinoamericano en el Museo de Arte Blanton, la biblioteca de la Facultad de Bellas Artes (con materiales en musicología y etnomusicología), y la Biblioteca Presidencial Lyndon Baines Johnson (que cuenta con los archivos oficiales del gobierno del Presidente Johnson). Las colecciones relacionadas con Centroamérica albergadas en la Colección Benson incluyen: la Colección Arturo Taracena Flores, la “Human Rights Documentation Initiative” del archivo de la policia nacional en Guatemala, y versiones digitales de las transmisiones de Radio Venceremos en El Salvador.
Los viajes de investigación deberán llevarse a cabo generalmente durante el calendario académico de la Universidad de Texas. Es decir, entre finales de agosto y principios de diciembre para el semestre de otoño, y entre enero y mediados de mayo para el semestre de primavera. Podrían considerarse fechas en los períodos intermedios de vacaciones en verano e invierno, pero es importante hacer notar que tanto el profesorado como gran parte del personal en áreas de investigación se encuentran fuera de Austin durante éstas fechas.
Al término de su estadia de investigación, los becarios entregarán un reporte (máximo dos hojas), para evaluar la utilidad de los materiales consultados en la biblioteca durante sus investigaciones. Los académicos darán crédito al LLILAS y a la Colección Benson en las publicaciones que resulten de su investigación en Austin. Asimismo, los investigadores donarán una copia de dichas publicaciones a la Colección.
Los interesados deberán remitir la siguiente documentación, antes del 25 de marzo del 2016:
  • Carta detallando el área de investigación y el beneficio que el interesado espera recibir al consultar la Colección Benson (máximo tres hojas)
  • Curriculum vitae (máximo dos hojas)
  • Carta de nominación del director académico de la institución de origen, indicando si ésta cuenta con fondos de apoyo paralelos o de otra índole para respaldar al candidato en caso de resultar dentro de los ganadores del concurso del período 2016-2017
Los resultados del concurso se darán a conocer en mayo de 2016.

Master's in Community Organizing

Master's in Community Organizing

Learn the theory and practice of community organizing in the midst of a Latinx community center in Chicago.  The Autonomous University of Social Movements offers a unique two-year master's degree based in the Centro Autonomo in Chicago.  Students combine discussion-based academic classes with hands on experience and regular mentoring from experienced community organizers.

Classes include:
  • Popular education theory and practice, grounded in the work of Paulo Freire and Antonio Gramsci
  • An in depth look at community organizing models
  • Issues in community organizing, including race/gender/class dynamics, cross-cultural communication, leadership, and challenges facing immigrant communities
  • Issues in urban organizing, including social and political geography, police, public education, and public health
  • Political analysis, including anti-capitalist perspectives, local power structures, and State power structures
Each student designs and implements a community practicum, which might include:
  • Working with women's cooperatives dedicated to food preparation, cleaning services or day care
  • Developing community responses to police harassment, sub-par public education, wage theft, or the lack of cultural outlets for youth
  • Developing popular education curriculum for teaching ESL or bilingual adult high school classes
  • Defending homeowners facing foreclosure and tenants facing eviction in an effort to stop gentrification of the Albany Park neighborhood.
