Position Description
Texas State University is seeking to fill a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor position in Developmental Education with a focus on literacy education. Developmental education is a field of research, policy, and practice focused on student success at the postsecondary level. The field aims to understand and support all students in postsecondary contexts, but especially students who struggle and students who are identified as academically underprepared.
The Graduate Program of Developmental Education is housed within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education. This innovative and rapidly growing program offers Ph.D., Ed.D., and M.A. degrees in developmental education with three specialization areas: literacy, learning support, and mathematics. The search committee is looking for a candidate with the expertise and ability to serve in the literacy specialization area. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply, and especially those who are linguistically or culturally diverse, or who can contribute diverse perspectives to our program and university. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
·         Publishing peer-reviewed research at national and international levels in the areas of literacy and developmental education.
·         Seeking external funding related to literacy and developmental education.
·         Presenting on research and practice at local, national, and/or international conferences.
·         Teaching doctoral- and master’s-level courses. Course topics include but are not limited to: literacy theory, research, and pedagogy with a focus on postsecondary contexts.
·         Serving on thesis and dissertation committees.
·         Recruiting, advising, and mentoring graduate students.
·         Working collaboratively with faculty, students, and staff.
·         Engaging in service at the departmental, college, university, and professional levels.

Qualifications for Associate Professor Rank
Required:
·         Earned doctorate, by hiring date, in education, literacy education, developmental education, or a related area.
·         Evidence of teaching literacy (reading and/or writing) at the postsecondary level and/or evidence of scholarly activity with a focus on postsecondary contexts commensurate with rank.
·         Demonstration of excellence in teaching at the university level.
·         Evidence of the ability to establish and sustain a strong research agenda as evidenced by publications, presentations, grants, etc. commensurate with rank.
·         To be eligible for hire at the associate professor rank, candidate must meet the requirements for that rank as established by the department. The successful applicant will receive the appropriate rank and title based on University and department established standards.
Preferred:
·         Evidence of research and practice in the areas of developmental education, postsecondary student success, college readiness, transitions to college, and/or transitions from college to work.
·         Evidence of working with students who are linguistically or culturally diverse.
·         Evidence of published research and conference presentations in literacy education, developmental education, or a related area commensurate with rank.
·         Evidence of quantitative, qualitative, and/or mixed-methods research knowledge, skills, and experience.
·         Evidence of teaching literacy (reading and/or writing) effectively in postsecondary educational settings commensurate with rank.
·         Evidence of success in advising and mentoring master’s and doctoral students.
·         Evidence of success in seeking external grants and contracts.
·         Evidence of successful collaboration with university colleagues, students, and staff within a diverse environment

·         Evidence of success or the potential for success in advising and mentoring master’s and doctoral students.
·         Evidence of success or the potential for success in seeking external grants and contracts.
·         Evidence of successful collaboration with university colleagues, students, and staff within a diverse environment
