Curriculum & Instruction/Bilingual Education, Assistant Professor, Tenure-track

Position:  The Department of Teacher Education and Administration invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin Fall 2018. Summer teaching is contingent on student demand and funding. The successful candidate will join a dedicated Curriculum & Instruction/Bilingual Education faculty, with initial teacher certification programs in grades EC-12, an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction.

Rank/Salary:  Assistant Professor, tenure-track. Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience and background.

Responsibilities:  The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the continued development and success of the department through research, teaching, service, and mentoring of students. As a tenure-track member of the faculty, candidates will be expected to develop a record of scholarly research necessary to obtain tenure.  In addition, candidates will be expected to engage in teaching and to contribute service to the department, College of Education, and the University of North Texas.  Instructional roles include (a) teaching undergraduate and graduate courses leading to teacher certification in grades EC-12 and (b) teaching graduate courses in Curriculum & Instruction/Bilingual Education (and/or an appropriate academic teaching field) at the masters and doctoral levels.  The successful candidate will also be expected to develop or continue an ongoing research agenda in an area of specialization, including regular publications in quality outlets, professional presentations, and submission of external grant proposals. Service on dissertation committees, including the chairing of dissertations, is expected.

Qualifications:  Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate in Curriculum & Instruction, Bilingual Education, or related field.  Also required is teaching experience in grades EC-12 and at least 12 semester hours of graduate coursework in Bilingual Education.  Preference will be given to candidates who can teach in Spanish and who have teaching experience in higher education and in EC-12 settings with diverse student populations, especially bilingual students.  Preference will also be given to those who have a sub-specialization or research interest in an academic subject/teaching field.  ABD candidates will be considered as long as the doctorate is successfully defended prior to the start date.

Deadline Approaching: Call for Indigenous Writer in Residence Applications

Final Call for SAR Indigenous Writer in Residence Fellowship The School for Advanced Research (SAR), with the generous support of Lannan Foundation, is seeking applicants for the Indigenous Writer in Residence fellowship. The purpose of this fellowship is to advance the work of an indigenous writer pursuing their creative project while enabling them to interact with local scholar, artist, and Native communities. The fellowship runs from mid-June to early August and is open to writers indigenous to the United States or Canada. The fellow is provided with a $6,000 stipend, on-campus housing, office space, supplies allowance, library support, and travel reimbursement to and from SAR. La Pulga Pop-up Exhibition and Zine Sale
Deep Red Press​ and photographer ​Arlene Mejorado​ are pleased to bring a special pop-up exhibition of the work and photo zine, ​La Pulga​ to Austin, TX. Mejorado’s photographic series La Pulga​ captures the rich and vibrant culture of San Antonio's' flea market and pulga community. Through colorful and lively portraiture of market goers, vendors and still lives, her documents speak of people existing outside of the main stream of visual consumption and economic privilege. La Pulga brings visibility and dignity to the forefront of these communities at a time where latino immigrants are the discussion point for hateful and extremist dialogue. Her work represents working class Latina/os that make up the beating heart of San Antonio, TX. The event will feature selected photographs of the series supplemented with ​an artist talk where Mejorado will discuss her photographic process, on-going collaborations, publications and self-publishing herself.

About the Artist:
Arlene Mejorado is an artist and photographer specializing in creative documentary work. Raised in Los Angeles, she is the daughter of migrants, a ​nepantera​, and passionate observer. Mejorado earned her Bachelor's in Latin American Studies and Communications from the University of Texas at Austin working in both digital and print media. Her books, zines, digital content platforms, photography, and video illustrate the layered experiences and voices within different communities. Mejorado is critical and self-reflective of the process of documentation, as her projects often interweave themes of migration, diasporas, cultural hybridity, gender-queerness, race, and identity through a sensitive lens. Though her works is often created from real life material, it is also a process of self-expression and experimentation.

Artist Statement:
La Pulga ​is photo series that centers working class Latina/o communities of San Antonio, TX through various portraits. ​Pulgas​, flea markets, ​mercados, tangius,​ and swap meets are visually rich scenes that intertwine labor with social engagement and performance. I believes the outdoor market in any society is an energetic vortex of bursting life that permeates both the synchronicity of social order and the unpredictability of chaos. Through constant visits to pulgas in San Antonio, I capture individuals that partake in outdoor market culture. These images reflect people that exist outside of pop culture’s visual consumption and “photogenic” socialites. This digital exhibit brings visibility to the daily resilience, thriving community, and vibrant beauty that exist in the pulgas on the outskirts of the city. The faces and culture she encounters in these spaces represent the beating heart of San Antonio.

Postdoc Opportunity! Postdoc in Race/Indigeneity in the Americas - Brown University - Jan 31 deadline

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University invites applications for a one-year non-renewablepostdoctoral fellowship as part of the 2018-19 Mellon Sawyer Seminar on Race and Indigeneity in the Americas. The successful applicant will have research and teaching interests that focus on race, racism, and indigeneity in the Americas. We seek candidates who can complement the Center’s interdisciplinary strengths and contribute to the existing emphasis on race and racialization in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latinx communities. Theoretical attention to questions of race, gender and sexuality is strongly encouraged.

The successful candidate must demonstrate scholarly promise and will be expected to collaborate with two graduate student fellows to coordinate workshops and seminars, co-curate a related exhibit, and contribute to the development of promotional materials. The postdoctoral fellow will teach an undergraduate course on race and indigeneity in Latin America and the Caribbean from the perspective of his/her own discipline.
Fellow will receive a salary of $60,000, benefits, and a research/travel fund of $3,000 per year. Ph.D. should be in hand by the start of the appointment on July 1, 2018. Applicants must have received their Ph.D. in any discipline in the humanities or social sciences from institutions other than Brown.
